A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Coronation… Print E-mail
Tuesday Was Supposed to Be Romney’s Anointment – Instead He Barely Survives

LANSING – The Michigan Republican elite and the Romney campaign had been planning the event for more than a year – the coronation of their favorite son, Mitt Romney on February 28th. It was supposed to clinch the nomination for Romney. It was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, it was a narrow victory over a challenger most voters hadn’t even heard of a month ago. In the words of Rick Perry, “oops.”

“Michigan Republicans have to be embarrassed with how yesterday’s planned coronation turned out,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “Romney was supposed to run away with the primary in Michigan. He had the name recognition, the endorsements, the money, and the organization. Instead, yesterday’s results proved exactly how weak a candidate Mitt Romney actually is – he didn’t win, Rick Santorum lost.”

“There’s obviously a lack of enthusiasm on the Republican side for these candidates,” added Brewer. “This election was Rick Santorum’s to lose. Had he not made numerous gaffes over the past week including his opposition to contraception, his attacks on President Kennedy, and his comments that President Obama was a ‘snob’ for wanting kids to go to college, Santorum would have won Michigan’s GOP primary.”

“If Romney can barely beat a self-destructive, extreme candidate like Rick Santorum in his home state, how does he expect to beat President Obama in fall?” Brewer asked. “Romney limps out of Michigan a wounded candidate facing a long, hard fight for the nomination.”
